Dog Vaccinations

What Do We Vaccinate Dogs Against?

1) Canine Distemper

Symptoms - Severe coughing with discharges from the eyes and nose; loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhoea and may eventually experience fits.

2) Infectious Canine Hepatitis

Symptoms - Very rapid decline into fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, inflamation of brain, often progressing rapidly to death.

What's the risk? - Recovered animals excrete the virus for several months. Young animals are mostly affected and contract the virus by inhalation or ingestion.270x270_fitbox-0405dogs.jpg

3) Canine Parvovirus

Symptoms - Very rapid decline into vomiting, dehydration, abdominal pain and bloody diarrhoea.

What's the risk? - Extremely hardy virus; survives in the environment for long periods of time; spread by the faeces of infected dogs and can be carried on the soles of shoes; often rapidly fatal, especially in young dogs.

What's the risk? - An airborne virus that leaves younger dogs at the greatest risk, especially in cities; potentially fatal.

4) Bordetella and Parainfluenza (Kennel Cough)

Symptoms - Persistant, hacking cough, sometimes developing running eyes and sneezing, and a chronic lifetime cough.

What's the risk? - Highly contagious, airborne and dog-to-dog contact, especially where dogs are in kennels, at dog-training classes and shows, or even just out in the park!

5) Leptospirosis

Symptoms - Sleepiness, fever, severe thirst, urinating more frequently, progressing to abdominal pain, bloody diarrhoea and jaundice.

What's the risk? - Contracted from infected water or rats urine; can progress to death within hours.

Keeping a record of Vaccination

Your vaccination record is an important document, especially if you need to board your dog at kennels, and to keep a record that the correct vaccination boosters have been given. We always keep the records within our computer system and can provide you with a replacement vaccination card should you need one.

What about Rabies?

Thankfully, the UK is free from rabies, however, should you wish to travel abroad with your dog, the PETS travel scheme enables travel from the UK to a number foreign destinations. To qualify, your dog must be microchipped, vaccinated against rabies, and then blood tested to check the level of immunity gained. A PETS passport is then issued which allows free travel to and from the UK 6 months later. For more information please telephone us, or click here to be taken to the DEFRA website.
